Why The Ice Cream Van Is Still Sweet
As a child growing up in the hood, hearing the whimsical and enchanting tune of the Mr Whippy truck moving up my suburb was one of the pinnacles of my week.
Hearing a slight sound in the offing, my tiny sensors would prick up and I might become concentrated on locating the location.
Was it really? Should it be? As the van made its way into my turf and crawled down the hill I would shoot up with joy and race to seek out my folks, closely followed by my younger sisters.
Bobbing up and around before whichever guardian was unlucky enough to be the first to be found, we might cry "Can we have Mr Whippy? ! Can we get ice cream pleeeeeeaaaaaaseee?!!"
More often than not, our polite prayers were unluckily turned down, yet when that spellbinding day when my rents coughed up the $2 coin eventually dawned, we were all smiling from ear to ear. What would we get this time? Who would go for the popcorn? Who was selecting the nut sundae? Were there any other flavours to taste?
Now that I'm all mature, I can't say that I continue to have the matching reaction when I hear Mozart's 'Greensleeves ', but a familiar (albeit forcibly muffled) sense of excitement takes over everytime I see an ice cream stand.
While the convention of the Mr Whippy van is undeniably fading, the presence of ice cream stands and shops are still felt in suburbs, communities and at markets and fetes all through Australia. What is this dessert i am thinking of?
I had this dessert once and i cannot remember the name of it, and it bugs me because i want to find how to make it and it doesnt help that i dont know what i am even talking about. It is made of a waffle bowl and is covered in i think fudge? in the inside like you spread the fudge on the inside of the bowl. then in the waffle bowl there is this whipped cream looking thing that is very sweet. does anyone know what i am talking about? if so what is it called or what are the ingredients.
