Cherry Laurel As Shrubs
Cherry laurel or English laurel are scientifically labeled as Prunus laurocerasus belonging to the Genus Prunus of the shrub kingdom. It can be present in several nations stretching from Albania, Bulgaria, Southwest Asia, Europe, Turkey to so far as Iran.
The leaves or foliage looks like the real laurel herbs that belong to the genus Laurel nobilis from the Lauraceae genus. Nevertheless, that is when the similarity ends. Laurel nobilis have foliage which emit an aromatic fragrance and are widely used as fragrance or food spice. The foliage of the Cherry laurel do not produce a similar fragrance or share the identical functions in the kitchen.
Cherry laurels are widely used as ornamental plants or bushes. It is often used to generate hedges or ground covers in backyard landscape due to the lively color radiated by the foliage and because of its survival level in outdoor landscaping. Laurel crops are strong to withstand severe thriving situations such as variable soil pH, low water source and quantity of sunlight. Fortunately they are amenable to getting trimmed or pruned; allowing the hedge to take on a variety of shapes and forms. The leaves is great for use as highlight in floral arrangements or in floristry.
The body of the laurel evergreen shrub may grow as high as 5 meters to 15 meters tall at its complete height. Its trunk can reach a width up to 60 centimeters broad when full grown.
The foliage are a lively dark green shade. The texture of the foliage feel leathery to touch and is highly glossy or shiny if viewed under a full light. The surface of the leaves measures ten to 30 centimeters broad as well as four to ten centimeters wide, with a finely serrated border.
The many fruits are tiny cherries, about 1 to 2 cm broad which turns black as it ripens in the early autumn. This might be the source of the “cherry laurel”. However, the cherries it developed are not recommended for ingesting, as the seeds are toxic just like the leaves and the bark.
The floral sprouts appear during early spring and open during the early summer. It can produce a 7 cm to 15 cm racemes of thirty to forty flowers, with each flower measuring about 1 cm broad. It has 5 creamy white petals accented by numerous yellowish stamens.
There are many varieties related to the cherry laurel that are cultivated worldwide for use in landscaping and ornamentation. The Aureovariegata have leaves possessing differently colored spots or marks and a yellow margin. The Otto Luyken variety are dwarfed versions of the cherry laurels with miniature leaves of about 10 cm wide. The Zabeliana variety is widely preferred in cold countries because of its high tolerance for cold temperatures.
