Getting A Horse To Pose
Posing is unnatural to horses. It has been proven possible by a lady equestrian photographer from Pasadena, California, whose photos are cherished by famous people. The photographer, whose motor home office can be seen parked at tracks and show rings all over the state and who even turned her lens on the riders at the Olympics in Montreal including Britain's Princess Anne, started her career with a loaned out camera from a Pasadena City College photography class. When this Pasadena High School graduate signed up for photography classes at PCC, it was only natural that she'd shoot horses for practice. That's because Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were so close to the home she lived in since 10 years of age. She did her homework every weekend at the stables with her borrowed camera. Her concentration was pulled to photography once her first photo sold, and she left behind music, art, and journalism.
Her first job was as an assistant to two famous equestrian photographers, for which she helped focus and pose horses at shows, tracks, and state fairs throughout the country. Her second job was with another photographer pair and involved only shows in California. Her mother helps out with business affairs, while she enjoys her Swedish camera with German lens.
She catches them at just the right moment, when making a six-foot jump or nosing it to first place. For formal shots, she has them down on all fours. Photogenic horses like to show off. She found horses that immediately perk their ears or raise their heads when they feel a camera being focused on them. Then again, there are horses that could care less about being photographed. Random shots seldom end in good pictures. Those hunters and jumpers, for instance, should be caught in mid-air with their knees and legs in a tucked position and bodies at a correct angle. With their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs, Tennessee walkers look best. A stock horse looks best stopping in a slide, while a saddle horse looks best with his legs and head held high. She has been highly recognized for her photos of the Peruvian Paso, a South American endangered species that enthusiasts are trying to increase in number. It would be best to snap a picture when their forelegs are pointed away from their bodies. Their riders add to their value, with their traditional white ponchos and elaborate bridles and saddles.
Photography has enabled her to see many celebrity horse lovers. She has even made it to royal circles. Her coverage of Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics brought her side-by-side with the Queen, herself. The Queen said she always feels nervous every time her daughter would attempt a high jump. Though she also swims, back packs, bicycles, pans for gold and sometimes even rides a horse, she felt a need to intersperse her horse photography with photos of fork lifts.
No posing is necessary with fork lifts.
