Japan's Gion District And The Popular Geisha That Tourists Love

When travelling to Japan, don't forget to take a trip to Gion, otherwise known as 'the Geisha District'.
For a reasonable price, you can visit one of the special shops located within the Gion district of Kyoto to have professional photos taken. The Gion district is famous for being one of the few places left in Japan where you can still manage to spot geisha or their trainees, maiko, in their traditional garb.

Patrons are asked to sit still for a length of time, anywhere from 15 minutes to half-an-hour depending on the skill of the artist, while white make-up is applied in a thick layer to their face and neck.
Usually, part of the neck is left unmarked in an inverted V as traditionally in Japanese culture, the neck was one of the most alluring qualities of a woman.
Next comes the layers of kimono both geisha and maiko wear.
The first layer is the under kimono, which will be red for maiko and white for geisha, followed by the heavy over kimono in colors fit for the season.
Finally, the visitor is has an obi wrapped around their waist to secure the entire outfit.
Each layer is heavily embroidered and the gowns themselves can be worth the equivalent of $25,000 and getting dressed in them is a long, time consuming process.

It is not uncommon for breaks to be taken between makeup and dressing and the photo session in which the client can rest with a small snack and the green tea Kyoto is famous for. Later the photos are developed on site while the client returns their street clothes. This is one of the most unique souvenirs available to buy in Kyoto.
