Great Reasons To Learn German
Without a doubt, learning German is an excellent investment in both your personal and professional life. Popular reasons for people to start learning German are to make the most of holidays in Germany, be able to chat with German relatives and prepare for study exchange programs in Germany. While these are all good reasons to learn German, you might be surprised to discover just how many other great reasons there are that you've never considered. Here are a some others for you to think about:
Germany has the largest population of all the European countries and the language is very widely spoken internationally. Learning German can connect you with 120 million native speakers around the globe and you might be surprised to learn that German is the 3rd most popular foreign language taught worldwide. So German will not only allow you to build relationships with people in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein but also German speakers all over the world.
Germany is the economic powerhouse of the European Union and one of the biggest international exporters. Germany's international trade earnings are proof of the high demand for German goods. Knowing German creates many business opportunities, not just in Germany itself but also internationally. Given Germany's commitment to innovation, it's perhaps not surprising that two-thirds of the world's leading international trade fairs take place in Germany.
But all work and no play makes Jake a dull boy and the German's also know how to enjoy themselves and are the biggest spenders of tourist dollars in the world. In 2007, the Germans spent a record 91 billion euros on international travel. Tourism companies, airlines, hotels and car rental businesses that can communicate in German will profit from the German tourism industry.
Don't be fooled into thinking that the German language is dying. The only language markets that produce more books annually than the Germans are the Chinese and English publishing industries. As very few German books are translated into English, the only way to appreciate these books is by learning to speak German.
German speaking countries have a very rich cultural heritage. Germany is often referred to as the land of poets and thinkers. 10 Nobel prizes have been awarded to German, Austrian and Swiss German authors. Philosophy and the sciences would be unthinkable without the contributions of German speakers. Knowing German allows you to access the works of these people in their original language allowing you a more in depth appreciation of their work. Even if your not so interested in Germany on an intellectual level the high quality of life in German speaking countries may well be of interest to you.
You might be thinking that this sounds good in theory but the German language is too difficult to learn. If that's the case, you'd be wrong! I think you'd be surprised to discover just how similar English is to German. Due to their common heritage, German and English share many similarities in both vocabulary and grammar. Also convenient is that German words are spelled phonetically. Besides, learning German is fun when you make use of these German language podcasts.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Why doesn't Marx's "From each according to ability, to each according to need" philosophy work mostly?
I think this philosophy is brilliant and beautiful and has loads of potential and I use it in my every day life. But it seems that for a lot of other people, it just isn't appealing or plausible. Why do many people seem to think it is a joke? And what is the major flaw in his philosophy (other than overestimating human nature)?
Thanks!
Answer:
There isn't necessarily any flaw. Marx's philosophy hasn't been given adequate testing ground. He actually said that mature capitalist society we have a socialist revolution. But the communist revolutions did not happen in mature capitalist societies. Indeed, how would we know what a mature capitalist society looks like? For all we know we may not even be 1/4 way through the capitalist era.
Its also not clear that his main problem was overestimating human nature (although I guess he probably did overestimate it). What he more precisely required of humans is that they are capable of overcoming their indoctrinated capitalist thinking; but what we saw was that when you get rid of capitalism, people aren't easily ready for communism, and they certainly won't be naturally motivated to work for the state.
They may be more naturally motivated to 'do their bit' if they work together in much smaller communities, rather than for the state, which is not a 'natural institution'. And even such a change in people's motivations to 'doing their bit for the community' could be a change in psychology that could take centuries to develop.
