TIPS FOR GETTING CREATIVE WITH FLOWERS
For a beginner, arranging flowers can seem a bit intimidating as there are many different shapes and styles to consider and it’s hard to know where to begin.
Some people are even a little nervous when it comes to unwrapping a beautiful bouquet from a florist and putting it into a vase at home. Sound familiar?
It’s not difficult. There are some simple guidelines that you can follow to create your own visual masterpieces that will be a joy to look at and an asset that will beautify any room. Once you’ve conquered the basics, toss the rules away and explore your own creativity. The more you practice, the more confidence you’ll have to put together unique creations that beautify any space and bring pleasure to others.
Things to consider are balance, scale, space, harmony, unity and texture. In other words – your composition has to be pleasing to the eye.
First of all, select flowers that appeal to you. You can use just about anything from monochromatic flowers (all one type and colour), flowers that are of similar colouring or an eclectic bunch of different colours and shapes. For beginners, it’s probably wise to choose colours that complement each other, eg pink and white, yellow and white. Try and aim for equilibrium with colour so that the darker ones don’t dominate and overpower the lighter-coloured ones. Another general rule of thumb is to use an odd number of flowers as a starting point.
Try and visualize your arrangement in the place where it’s going to be seen. A tall arrangement will look dramatic in a corner location or in a central position whereas a lower, elongated one will be suitable for a table decoration. For inspiration, you may like to look at interior decorating magazines, books or trawl some websites of local Perth florists before you set off to buy flowers or pick from your garden.
First up, choose a container. Of course, your flower selection will dictate the size and shape of it to a large extent. There are so many creative choices from old bottles, tins and glasses, teapots and jugs, baskets, crates and vases. A round fishbowl glass vase is great for creating traditional country style arrangements while a square or rectangular vase is more modern and sophisticated. Tall flowers will need a taller vase or pedestal to keep the proportion while a colourful ceramic container will add a fun, informal element.
Start by putting the largest, most eye-catching flowers in the centre of the container. The general idea is to have the longest stem around one and a half times the height of the vase. Then, flowers are added in order of size, with foliage inserted last. Stems can also be cut a bit shorter to create depth with the varying lengths. Full flowers (ie open ones) look best on shorter stems whereas narrower flowers with buds (eg gladiolus) look better longer.
Fillers or foliage are used to fill any holes and to create texture, width and height. Filler flowers with small blossoms, small leaves and feathery textures also work well. The majority of the foliage should be in the centre and the rear of the arrangement.
It’s also worth distancing yourself from your creation every now and then in order to view it from afar. Just as an artist would evaluate their work in progress to check on the light, the look, the perspective etc – it’s the same with flower arranging. Don’t forget – you’re the artist here!
