Bone Chilling Sites To Visit From Paris Hotels
Perhaps the City of Lights should be re-named the City of Frights as holidaymakers staying in their Paris hotels will often find a wealth of attractions that go bump in the night. From the graveyard of the Lizard King to a gothic cathedral which is best known as the lair of a famous hunchback:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Until recently, the Hunchback of Notre Dame was nothing more than just a fable with Quasimodo as the main protagonist in the famous Victor Hugo novel. Then, last year it emerged that a hunchback worked in the famous cathedral during the 1820s carrying out post-revolution restorations to the cathedral. You could simply visit Notre Dame cathedral in your own time, or take a tour for an in-depth look at the stunning architecture.
The Catacombs
A short metro trip outside the city centre lies the scariest attraction in the whole of Paris, the Catacombs. Holidaymakers should be sure to leave their hotels early as the queues have been known to get quite lengthy. The bones of more than 6 million 18th century Parisians were placed inside these catacombs. Placed in a macabre style around the old labyrinthine chambers are the bones of these former city dwellers, with tibias and femurs interspersed with the odd human skull. Although they attract around 200 visitors a day, the catacombs are eerily quiet. Touring the area takes around 45 minutes and admission is €8.
The Phantom of the Opera
Travellers will find many Paris hotels situated around the Place de L'Opera due to its central location. However, the square also contains the theatre that first inspired book “The Phantom of the Opera”. The ghost in these walls is nothing like the Phantom she inspired; for a start she's female and doesn't hide behind a mask, instead she searches the corridors for her lost love.
