What do we mean by animal art with soul?
From the earliest images of cave paintings
depicting the raw spirit of survival and energy of a deer hunt, to the biblical parable of Noah’s Ark, to present day cartoons like the Lion King, images of wildlife art are all around us and have been since ancient times. Animal imagery appears to stir a basic connection human beings have with the Earth and the creatures we share it with.
Animal art with soul often evokes a deep emotional effect and carries the raw essence of the animal. It is more than an exercise in photo-realism – it goes deeper than a photograph, to encapsulate the very nature of the wildlife it portrays, it can go beyond any artistic style and even artistic ability. A novice artist can produce animal art with soul equally as well as a seasoned professional, especially when paying heed to the following five points common in the most successful wildlife paintings.
Living eyes.
The proverbial "windows to the soul". They have to contain a spark of life and show a character, mood or an identifiable reaction to a particular moment in the life of the animal subject. Colour and texture.
Re-create the texture of fur as exactly as possible to recreate the feeling of long, soft, short, coarse, curly, spiky, or straight hairs. Add the vital little signs of life!

The lighting
Dramatic lighting gives animation to work. Think of sunlight being filtered through the mane of a lion, or the cold reflected light on the flanks of a polar bear. A story
A good background often helps a picture to ‘tell a story’. Often the viewer of the picture may be able to dream up an ending for themselves and actively connect with the painting.
