Making of a Killer Animal
I recently read an Outside Magazine article talking about the ‘killer' mountain goat in Olympic National Park, as if this goat were some mad serial killer. The goat became aggressive with humans because the goat had become used to urine on and near trails and was attracted to the salt and sweat from humans. Human actions were responsible for the aggression of the goat, yet I saw no mention of the ‘killer' rangers that shot the goat. The goat was merely doing what its instincts taught it to do, but because of human interaction, a goat lost its life.
Killer is defined as a person or thing that kills.
Every year humans are responsible for killing deer, mountain lions, bears, wolves and more. We label them hunters. If a ranger is asked to put down an aggressive animal, he/she is a hero. I don't envy the rangers that have to euthanize these animals because the ranger's job is to protect the animals on the lands they take care of and I have no doubt it pains the rangers to have to put down an aggressive animal that only became aggressive after campers taught it to be so.
Increasing encounters with aggressive animals are being reported. The media claims these bears or goats or wild animals have to be shot to protect campers. Here's the problem I have. Aggressive bear, aggressive goat or whatever, these animals have been made aggressive for the most part by humans. In the rare instance, disease may play a role in aggression issues, but the majority of times, these animals are habituated to human food because campers don't listen to warnings. They leave food out, and hungry bears, smelling the food come and eat it. The bears scare off humans because they are big wild animals and they are hungry. Then they teach their cubs that these humans are a great source of food. The humans get scared and the bears get put down.
I read an article in which a bear was put down because it had done damage to a camper's car. The same article advised storing food and toiletries in the car but never a tent. A bear's sense of smell is hundreds of times more sensitive than humans. They can smell the food in the car and they can and will rip a car apart to get to the food. I can attest to that. My jeep's soft top was ripped open by a bear looking for the scent of food that had already been removed and been stored in a bear box. The scent that remained was enough for the bear to want to explore. I don't think that bear should be put down. It was trying to survive.
Once the bear becomes aggressive, or the goat, we then turn rangers into killers and ask that they shoot these animals so we can feel safe. Humans should not feel safe in nature. It is a wild place with wild animals. We go there so we can see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat, but they are wild and they can kill.
Here's a recipe for creating a killer animal:
• Getting between a mother and its young
• Feeding the wildlife because they are ‘cute' – this includes squirrels and foxes
• Leaving food out where animals can get into it.
• Keeping snacks in the tent.
• Leaving toiletries such as toothpaste and deodorant out where an animal can get to them. Bears will eat anything with a scent.
• Thinking that because you are in a park the animals should be tame.
• Invading an animal's space to take a picture.
• Not knowing how to handle an aggressive animal or what to do if they attack.
I cannot stress how important it is to respect the lives of these animals. Wild animals that become habituated to human food often have a hard time surviving in the wild, as they forget how to feed themselves when humans leave. A life is a life and just as we would protect the lives of our children, our pets or our loved ones, we should protect the lives of the wild animals we share the planet with.

Frequently Asked Questions...
what is a good bear cub like animal to have as a pet?
I realy love panda bears, polar bears, and koala bears but they are illegal to own. Is there any animal that is similar that i could love?
Answer:
I think that you should wait and see what pet you fall in love with. There are 'bear like' dogs, chows are somewhat bear like, but you could get a cuddly anything that has the mannerisms that you've seen in a bear.
Although it has to be said that all bears have huge claws and are willing to use them on anything that gets too near their space, perhaps seeing if you could help at a rescue or safari park or zoo and getting to 'know' what bears are really like would help.
